There’s one scratchcard in particular that intrigues me: it’s called Set For Life and it pretty much does what it says on the tin. Instead of a single win, the prize is £10,000 a month tax free, for thirty years: that’s £120,000 a year or £3.6 million in total.

Just imagine… never having to worry about money ever again. It’s something we all think about but being who I am, I give myself over to daydreams now and then about exactly what I’d do if this happened to me (which is entirely unlikely as I don’t do any lottery or scratchcards whatsoever). My “plans” have changed down the years, of course: back in the earliest days of the National Lottery the notion was to buy a place for my parents, one for me and a couple of holiday homes – one in the US – which would be rented out when not being used. These days it’s simpler. I’d get myself a small place and help out a few close friends. If I wanted to go somewhere else for a while, anything from a few days to a month or so, I’ve discovered there’s literally thousands of wonderful properties to rent, thus bypassing the fuss of the upkeep of a holiday home. That said, somewhere in Shropshire would be lovely. Pure pipedreams, of course… but isn’t it wonderful to imagine
